Improvement on MMORPG Leveling System

Posted by Michael Dickens on August 8, 2009

Warning: Nerdiness ahead. Proceed at your own risk.

Every time a new expansion comes out for Word of Warcraft, a bunch of people get really annoyed. Why? Let’s look at what happened when the first expansion came out. Some people got to level 60, the highest level. They worked really hard to get the best gear possible. But when the expansion came out and Blizzard added 10 new levels, making the level 60 gear obsolete. So a bunch of n00bs would have better gear than the hardcore players. I’m sure you can understand the annoyance.

So I propose a solution. Once you reach level 60, instead of leveling by killing creatures and doing quests, the only way to level is by doing advanced content such as endgame raids. Only these will provide experience. That way, adding more levels to the game will not make the high-level content obsolete.

The main problem with this is that it makes it harder for casual gamers to level. It may be possible to implement a system in which casual gamers can still get new content, but not necessarily get better gear than what hardcore gamers would have had before the expansion.

Do you think that such a policy would work?

I’m not an MMORPG player, so it’s not clear to me why adding 10 levels would obsolete gear or allow noobs to have better gear than veterans. Could you explain this? In every CRPG I’ve played where the level cap gets raised, the old high-level gear is still useful, and already high-level characters have a much easier time of hitting the new cap than new (noob) characters do.

    • It is probably due to the fact that leveling in World of Warcraft is easier than in most MMORPGs.

Higher level items tend to be better than lower level items. So when 10 new levels are added, then even the best level 60 gear is not as good as the average level 70 gear.

Still, surely those veteran players with their level 60 characters and superior gear are going to have a lot easier time upgrading to level 70 than a noob with a level 2 character and his Half-Broken Stick of Tripping Over Stuff -5. 🙂

I assume that having the best gear is almost entirely about prestige. It’s a curious bit of prestige, though, since better gear makes the game easier. Shouldn’t veteran players be more interested in “beating” the game with the worst gear they can, rather than the best? Oh well.
