The Big List of Made-Up Statistics

Posted by Michael Dickens on April 16, 2007

I enjoy making up random statistics. Sometimes they sound plausible. Sometimes they don’t. Here’s a list of the ones I can think of right now (I will add more as I make them up).

40% of all American minors would like the taste of broccoli if they would just try it.
75% of all people in the world have eaten a worm at some point in their lives.
50% of these statistics are in fact true. This is not one of them.
You type the letter “g” 44% slower than the fastest-typed letter, “a”.
On average over the last 200 years, there have been 8% more births on Mother’s Day than the average daily number of births.
25% more presents are bought on Mother’s Day than on Christmas.
92% of all Christians pronounce Hannukah wrong (the “H” is pronounced kinda like “ch”, as though you are clearing your throat). 72% of all Jews also pronounce it wrong.
86% of the people in the Barrens now hate Chuck Norris.
0.038% of everyone who looks at this blog realizes that not even enough people look at this blog for that statistic to be correct.
30% of people believe this statistic.
Frogs are not that stupid: only 2% of frogs believe this statistic.

If you would like to submit your own made-up statistic, send it in to:

Question of the Week: do you like this name?

Posted by Michael Dickens on April 16, 2007

My codename is Morphilator. As of 10 seconds ago. Do you think that’s good?

I was trying to think of a good codename. I was thinking “Destroyer? No, too obvious. Decimator? No. Hmm, codenames starting with “M” are cool. What about Mutilator?” I couldn’t come up with anything better than Mutilator for a while. I wanted a made up word. And then it came to me: Morphilator. It has the word “morph” in it, which implies coolness, but it sounds like “mutilator” and has the same ring: powerful, destructive.

The Morphilator. Hmm, I like the ring to that. Do you?

I will use Bilfo’s question of the week next week. Feel free to submit potential questions of the week here.

Question of the Week: What should next week's question be?

Posted by Michael Dickens on April 11, 2007

I think Question of the Week is a pretty good idea. But I can’t think of a good question right now. Can you?

The Stanford Achievment Test (not the SAT, that's Scholastic Aptitude Test)

Posted by Michael Dickens on April 4, 2007

This post is NOT about WoW.

That test was funny.

On one of the questions, which was something like “What’s the best way to find out more about bla bla bla?” And one of the answers was:
“Look it up on the Internet on your school’s library computer.”

Hmm . . . does that strike you as odd? I talked to some acquaintances of mine and we thought of a few reasons why they might say this. But can you?
