Philosophical Multicore

Sometimes controversial, sometimes fallacious, sometimes thought-provoking, and always fun.

Utilitarianism

One of the most common topics for discussion on this blog is Utilitarianism, the principle that the highest end of morality is to maximize happiness and minimize suffering.

For an introduction to Utilitarianism, read Utilitarianism in Five Minutes.

These essays explain why I support Utilitarianism:

The Case for Consequentialism
On the Moral Obligation to Prevent Suffering

My personal favorite posts are my essays on Utilitarianism that are (as far as I know) original contributions to the field. The ideas in these essays have brought my thinking to a new level and made everyday life simpler for me. I hope they can do the same for you; and even if they don’t, they’ll give you something to think about.

Sustainable and Unsustainable Good
Morality in the Real World
Individual Liberty as Means to Collective Gain

For something a little heavier, here’s John Stuart Mill’s definitive work, Utilitarianism.
